The Design District is a working commercial district that happens to have people living in it. Showrooms and galleries occupy converted warehouses with glass frontage and enormous open floors; above and around them are lofts and newer apartment buildings. Design studios, architecture practices, agencies and photography spaces fill the upper floors and back buildings. They tend to be open-plan with a lot of shared surfaces and a kitchen that gets used properly rather than for coffee. Most run on a two-to-four-night schedule. Loft residences

Fit-outs and build-outs

The district turns over commercial space constantly — showrooms are reconfigured, galleries change hands, studios move in. Post-construction cleaning after a fit-out is scheduled around an opening date and usually needs more than one pass, since fine dust settles onto glass and concrete for days.
